An officer shot a naked man Saturday afternoon after police say the man turned to retrieve the gun he dropped.

Officers received the call about a naked suicidal man around 11:00 a.m. in a church parking lot on Warm Springs Road near Eastern Avenue, said Sgt. Jeff Clark, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

Officers attempted to talk to the man, who ended up dropping the gun.

“However when they were getting ready to take him into custody the male turned and ran back towards the firearm,” Sgt. Clark said.

Police released a K9 unit, but it was not effective. One officer fired one round, striking the man, Sgt. Clark said.

Police immediately provided medical assistance to the man. Medical responders rushed the man to an area hospital where he’s listed as stable, Sgt. Clark said.

The shooting is still under investigation. LVMPD will release more information on the incident in the coming days.

This is the 16th officer-involved shooting for LVMPD of 2017. It’s a sharp increase from 10 OIS incidents for all of 2016.

Investigators say in all of the OIS events this year, the suspect was armed with some type of weapon.
