One suspect was killed and another wounded in a shootout with Metro Police that went on for several blocks in the downtown Las Vegas area Wednesday morning.
Police were investigating a shooting around 7:30 a.m. at Eastern and Owens avenues where a man was shot multiple times at a car wash.
Felix Perez, who works at a nearby AutoZone rushed to help the man.
“He was awake. He was looking at me but he wasn’t speaking. So, I told him, just hold on help is on the way.”
The man died at UMC.
According to Metro Police Captain Yasenia Yatomi, some officers spotted the suspects’ SUV around 9:30 a.m. and attempted to do a vehicle stop, but the driver took off at a high rate of speed. The suspects inside the vehicle fired multiple rounds at the officers during the pursuit, and one officer returned fire.
The chase ended at Hollingsworth Elementary School at 18th Street and Ogden Avenue with one suspect attempting to get into the school. He suffered a gunshot wound and was arrested. The second suspect attempted to flee and exchanged gunfire with officers. He was shot and killed.
The suspect never entered the school which was on a hard lock down. Kids were at the school for a summer program.
“Just a little worried because it’s so close. You know, he’s in summer school so it’s worrisome to know something like this could happen right by the school,” said Felicia Rosario, parent of Hollingsworth student.
No one at the school was injured.
According to Metro, a preliminary investigation shows two officers fired their weapons during the incident. This is the 10th officer-involved shooting of 2018. The identity of the officers will be released after 48 hours.
There is still a large police presence in the area and people are advised to stay away. Several streets are closed while police investigate.
