One man is dead and another wounded in an early morning shooting near Nellis Air Force Base.
Metro homicide detective, Lt. Dan McGrath, said it started as an argument outside the Craigmont Villas apartments on North Lamont St, near Craig Rd and Nellis Blvd. That fight escalated into an exchange of gunfire around 12:40 a.m.
The victims were transported to University Medical Center. An African-American man in his 30’s died. His identity will be released at a later date by the coroner.
Another man was shot in the leg and should recover. The second victim may have been an innocent bystander, according to police.
One of the gunmen claimed the shooting was self defense. The man who has been identified as 29-year-old Keon Miller, was not wounded, and he stayed on the scene, and called 911.
Metro police said Miller used a high-powered rifle and that some of the bullets went through the walls of other apartment units. Officers went to each unit to make sure no one else was hurt.
Metro Police said evidence at the scene doesn’t support Miller’s claims that the shooting was self-defense, so he was arrested on one count of murder with a deadly weapon. He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center.
Homicide investigators are hoping to interview people who saw the fight.
“Any time there’s a shooting outside in the middle of a complex, it would be difficult to claim self-defense,” said McGrath. “We believe he had to go get a rifle.”
