Transformer explosion in Queens lights up sky in New York City, causes power outages

Like something out of a movie –we’re thinking “Independence Day” — a transformer explosion in Queens changed the dark night sky in New York City to bright blue.

The explosion caused a brief electrical fire and knocked out power in the area.

According to CNN, the explosions temporarily closed La Guardia Airport in Queens, and all terminals were impacted by the loss of commercial power, causing the FAA to issue a temporary ground stop.  All planes have since resumed flight.

No one was hurt.
