New details in the murder of a 14-year-old Henderson boy emerged Friday.

Police say Giovanni Melton was shot to death by his father, Wendell following a domestic dispute Thursday.  Court records show the tragedy comes after years of family drama.

Giovanni attended Coronado High School, where staff made the announcement in the first period Friday.

“He always had a smile on his face,” one of Giovanni’s classmate said.

Counselors were also available for students to speak to on campus.

“We talked about our favorite things about him,” one student said. “One word to describe him; how he made us feel.  How we were feeling.”

Reporter John Langeler: “What was your word?”
Student: “I said that he was selfless.”

Henderson Police say Giovanni Melton was shot and killed by his father, 53-year-old Wendell Melton, an employee with United Airlines.

Detectives say the two were arguing when Wendell pulled the trigger.  Wendell was the one who called the police.

Court documents show there was a complicated past for the Melton family.  There was a lingering custody battle for  Giovanni and his sibling, that included being abandoned by their mother, along with Wendell illegally having guns and threatening his family with them.

There was even an allegation against Wendell that he beat Giovanni.

According to Henderson Police, Giovanni wasn’t living with any family at the time of his death. However, they haven’t revealed who he was living with.

Neighbors in the apartment complex in Seven Hills say they rarely saw adults inside.

8 News NOW reached out Giovanni Melton’s mother, but she was too distraught to talk.

Students say a vigil is planned for Sunday night in honor of Giovanni’s memory.
