Shooting victim’s mother: ‘They are lying’

Three teenagers are in custody in connection to the death of 17-year-old Matthew Minkler.

According to the arrest report, one of the suspects said Minkler was killed after a game of Russian roulette went horribly wrong.

Jamie Minkler was heartbroken when she talked to 8 News NOW Thursday night.

“Look at our love,” Jamie said as she shared photos of her son.

Jamie does not believe that her son was killed during a game of Russian roulette.

“Matthew was not playing any game. He thought they were his friends,” Jamie said. “They took someone who was needed and loved in this community.”

Minkler was found dead late Friday in an abandoned house on the 2000 block of Cool Lilac Avenue.

Those so-called friends appeared in court Thursday morning, 16-year-old Jaiden Caruso and 17-year-old Kody Harlan will be tried as adults.

Henderson Police say another teenager was arrested late Wednesday, near Warm Springs and Pecos Road. Due the suspect being a minor, police did not release any other information.

“Caruso is charged with murder with use of a deadly weapon. The facts seem to suggest that he is the one who actually shot the other young boy,”said District Attorney Steve Wolfson.

Right now, it’s unclear what charges the third person is facing, but police know other people were inside of the house during the shooting.

“I believe that law enforcement is going to learn who they are and eventually catch up to them,” he said.” So, it’s probably in their best interest to come forward now and tell the truth.”

Wolfson said tragic crimes involving juveniles is increasing.

In 2016, seven juveniles were charged with either murder or attempted murder.

In 2017, that number jumped to 11.

This year, there have already been 18.

There is a GoFundMe account set up for Matthew Minkler.
