Sandoval signs bill for tougher penalties on hit-and-run drivers

News

There have been more than 600 hit-and-run crashes in the valley this year alone, but a new law may change things.  Governor Brian Sandoval has signed into law a bill that would impose tougher punishment for hit-and-run drivers.

Senate Bill 245 makes the penalties for hit-and-run drivers the same as those who commit felony DUI.  The sentence would be two to 20 years in prison without the possibility of probation even if the driver isn’t impaired at the time of the crash.

“It’s a win-win for victims. It’s a win-win for law enforcement. We want people to stay on the scene,” Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said.

SB 245 is the most beneficial for victims because it gets justice for people like Eva Bazzarre.  Bazzarre was injured in a hit-and-run crash on April 22.

Bazzarre was involved in a five-car pile up along US 95 and Cheyenne Avenue.  Bazzarre’s car was a total loss. The driver who caused the wreck took of and still hasn’t been found.

“I was like, ‘he’s gone, I can’t believe it.’  This is too surreal you know,” Bazzarre said?

Witnesses on the scene during the accident said the suspects vehicle is a lifted Ford pickup that was either white or gray in color.

Bazzarre said images of her vehicle and her commute to work bring back the nightmares from that day. Bazzarre said every time she drives in the area of Cheyenne and US 95 where she almost lost her life, her heart skips a beat.

“Right as you approach Cheyenne, it gets pretty intense.  I am not that relaxed yet while I am driving,” said Bazzarre.

Bazzarre says the injuries she sustained during the accident cost her tens and thousands of dollars and weeks off the job.

“I never had bruises on my body like that before,” Bazzarre said.

Metro is investigating the crash.  Bazzarre hopes they find the driver who caused the crash soon because she believes it will help her heal.

“People are looking for him and they will find him.  I feel it in my heart that eventually they will find him,” Bazzarre said.
