News

Matthew Minkler, the 17-year-old whose body was found in an abandoned home was shot during a game of “Russian Roulette,” according to the arrest reports for both suspects.

Kody Harlan, 17, and Jaiden Caruso, 16, were arrested in connection with the killing of Minkler on Friday, June 8. Both have been certified as adults in this case.

Caruso is facing a charge of murder with use of a deadly weapon and Harlan is facing a charge of accessory to murder with use of a deadly weapon. Both are facing charges of robbery and destroying evidence.

The teens were taken into custody after fleeing a traffic stop and crashing a stolen car, police said.

As a result of the stolen vehicle investigation, detectives say they learned about the homicide which occurred at a residence near Sunridge Heights Parkway and Eastern Avenue.

According to the arrest reports, several teens were at the home when one of the teen suspects pulled out a revolver and proposed a game of “Russian Roulette.” However, he proposed being the only one to handle the gun, instead of passing it around the group. It was during these actions that Minkler was shot and killed.

After the shooting, everyone fled the house and no one helped Minkler or called 9-1-1.

The report said police learned of the shooting when interviewing the teens. Police found video on one of the teen’s cell phones of him saying, “Bro, I just caught a body.” According to police, that refers to killing someone. The video also showed Minkler’s body in a pool of blood in the kitchen.

The teen’s told police that Minkler was their friend and the shooting was an accident but police found Minkler’s wallet in the stolen car. The teen’s purchased shoes and drugs later that evening, the report said.

Minkler’s body was found hidden in a closet, police said.
