POLICE: Suspect in active shooter incident near Zion National Park in custody

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – A man is in police custody following an exchange of gunfire with police during a pursuit through Rockville, Utah near Zion National Park Wednesday afternoon.

Police responded to a call about a man brandishing a handgun during an argument around 3:41 p.m. Officers located the suspect’s car and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.

The suspect drove away in his vehicle and began shooting at police as they pursued him towards Zion National Park.

As the suspect drove into Rockville, Utah he exchanged gunfire with police, crashing his Ford Pickup truck shortly after.

After exiting his vehicle, the suspect shot at officers once again and before running into a nearby neighborhood.

He was later taken into custody and transported to St. George Regional Hospital. His condition is unknown.

Police are not releasing the suspect’s name at this time.

“The investigation is still in the early stages and is expected to proceed throughout the night. Additional information will likely be released tomorrow as it becomes available,” the Washington County Critical Incident Task Force said.

Investigators are asking any potential victims who have not yet spoken with police, to contact dispatch at (435)-634-5730 to speak with an investigator.
