The Raiders have lost their previous three games and are currently last place in their conference. Despite that, they’re still rising in a different kind of ranking system, based on how valuable they are as a team.
Forbes has come out with it’s annual list ranking the most valuable NFL teams. The Raiders were once at the bottom of the pack, but not anymore.
Some say the jump is because they’ll soon be moving to Las Vegas.
Construction is well underway on the new Raiders stadium as Las Vegas gets ready to welcome the team.
“I grew up in San Jose, California, was a Raider fan,” said Kevin Lewis.
Local NFL fan Kevin Lewis has swapped his support for the Raiders, for the 49ers. But he still wants to show them that famous Vegas hospitality.
“I’m a football fan, so I’ll support them for a win, for our city,” he said.
As that support and the stadium rises so does the team’s value. This month, Forbes ranked the Raiders as the 18th most valuable NFL team, at $2.4 billion. That’s around a $1 billion increase from 2015, when the Raiders were ranked 31 out of 32 teams.
So, why the jump?
“It could be because of the new stadium, that attracts more money, and more people, so the value I think would increase,” Lewis said.
The experts agree.
“There was a similar increase when the Rams moved from St. Louis to Los Angeles, the same thing happened, there’s just always an increase related to a move to a new stadium,” said Mark Rich, founding partner, Rich, Wightman and Company.
Rich and his team have done business valuations for more than 35 years. He says a new stadium in a new location means more gate sales but that’s not the only benefit.
“A new stadium will host a Super Bowl within the first few years that the stadium is completed,” he said.
And he expects the value to keep going up.
“Traditionally, that is the case with sports franchises.”
Football fans are excited by all the hype.
“With the other teams that come to visit from around the country, their fans will come to Vegas, they’ll spend their money, helps our economy,” Lewis said.
Even if their allegiances lie elsewhere.
“I’ll definitely go to a game, preferably when the 49ers come to play,” he said.
In case you were wondering, Forbes ranks the Dallas Cowboys as the most valuable NFL team at $5 billion.
The Cowboys are also ranked as the most valuable sports team in the world.
