LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Las Vegas Metro police now say the man wanted for shooting and killing his father Wednesday night in the valley’s east side is in custody.

The father, 56-year-old Roy Gaines, was found dead inside a home on the 5000 block of Sagelyn Street, near Boulder Highway and Tropicana Avenue.

Police say 30-year-old Justin Gaines was taken into custody near the Arizona/New Mexico border.

Neighbors on Sagelyn Street say it was a chaotic scene last night, but not the first incident at the home.

“It was just sad what happened yesterday,” neighbor Sonia Deckert said. “We were all taken by surprised by the amount of police that was here an the command trucks came and swat.”

Detectives say Roy Gaines came in from northern California to visit his his son after concerns about his mental state.

After communication stopped, the victim’s wife and other son came home only to discover his body and no sign of his son.

One neighbor says this wasn’t the first problem here. Court records show gaines pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm. He was released on his own recognizance.

Gaines was supposed to be sentenced for that crime in January.

Gains will be extradited back to Nevada and will face at least two felony charges: open murder with the use of a deadly weapon, and robbery with the use of a deadly weapon.
