Metro Police say a 21-year-old mother stabbed to death her 2-year-old son and then stabbed herself.
The two were discovered in a home Monday morning in a south Las Vegas neighborhood.
According to a Metro Lt. Ray Spencer, a cousin of the woman called police when the woman and child had not come out of the bedroom since the previous day. The family member told police, the child’s father came to the home and went into the room and found the little boy dead the woman injured.
The home is located in the 8600 block of Manalang Road, near Pebble Road and Pollack Drive.
The woman was transported to Sunrise Medical Center for treatment. She is listed in critical condition.
The family member told police the woman had been battling depression since giving birth to the boy. 8 News NOW learned that the mother may have been suffering from postpartum depression.
“It breaks our heart to know that that kind of thing happens in this world today,” one neighbor said.
The 21-year-old mother’s name still hasn’t been released. Police say she will face an open murder charge for the child’s death.
