LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A 68-year-old woman is dead after she was hit by a car after a minor traffic accident west of the intersection of Warm Springs Road and Eastern Avenue in the south valley.
Metro police said the woman was retrieving a personal item from her car, and was hit by a 2005 Chrysler 300 after she tripped and fell as she walked back to the sidewalk.
Police arrested the driver of the Chrysler, Pedro Taligo-Garcia, 26, after he failed a sobriety test. He faces a DUI charge.
The deadly crash happened just before 7 p.m. Thursday west of the Eastern Avenue and Warm Springs intersection.
First responders originally responded to the scene just after 6 p.m. for a three-vehicle crash in the area. In that crash, two cars ended in the two far-right, eastbound lanes of Warm Springs Road, while one car was in the center turn lane.
Officials are not sure what led up to that crash, but the rain in the previous hours is suspected to be a factor, as roads were slick in the area. No one was hurt in that crash.
The Clark County Fire Department then set up flares to direct eastbound traffic through the crash site.
Over the next hour, the driver of the Toyota Camry that ended in the center turn lane — a 68-year-old woman — walked to her car from the sidewalk several times. At about 6:55 p.m., as she was returning from her car, she tripped and fell in the roadway.
The woman was taken to Sunrise Trauma where she was pronounced dead.
She has not yet been identified by authorities.
The woman’s death is the 98th traffic-related fatality in 2020 in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s jurisdiction.
