ONLY ON 8: Home burglarized, Christmas gifts stolen

Local News

Marie Orellano says her apartment was burglarized late Tuesday while she was at work.

When Orellano returned home after midnight, she found her apartment near Swenson St. and Twain Ave. ransacked. The thieves stole three TV’s that she bought during Black Friday and all of her children’s Christmas presents.

“Honestly, this is where it hit me all. When I looked over here and I saw all the cabinets were open,” said Orellano.

Metro Police say they do not have a description of the suspect(s), but they are actively investigating.

“I’m a single mom. I have two kids. I work a job. I don’t even have a car. I’m Ubering and Lyfting back to work everyday,” Orellano said. “My kids have to get babysat all the way on the north town. I spend so much money trying to take care of my daily expenses let alone to take a loss for all my Christmas gifts that I work really hard to get my kids.”

Orellano bought her two children remote control cars, tablets and clothes. Now, empty boxes and ripped up wrapping paper covers her floor.

“They knew they were taking kids things, so you knew this was a kids household and they had no mercy on my kids,” Orellano added. “Fine, take my money, take my jewelry, but what are you doing with my kids Christmas gifts?”

Josiah is 2-years-old and His brother, Clauzell, is one. Orellano plans to move from her complex because she feels unsafe.

“I’m just trying to look at the brighter side of things. They’re just gifts. My kids are safe. I’m still safe,” she said. “We still have tomorrow to look forward to and who is to say tomorrow won’t be a better day for us but just as of right now I’m overwhelmed with everything that took place here.”

To whoever did this, Orellano says she prays it doesn’t happen to their family.

“I’m just hurt that I have to start all over to get them their gifts again.”
