The Nye County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man killed in an officer-involved shooting that occurred at the Nevada National Security Site on Monday night.

The sheriff’s office says everything unfolded when 27-year-old Nekiylo Dawayne Graves of Iowa, trespassed in the area when he ran the main gate around 5:18 p.m.

Security Police officers on the site gave chase.  They called for the assistance of Nye County Sheriff as they pursued Graves.  Deputy John Kakavulias responded and caught up to the officers pursuing Graves.

Approximately 8 miles from the front gate, Graves came to a stop and got out of his car. He approached the security police officers and Deputy Kakavulias.  Graves ignored their commands and was fired upon by the security and the deputy.

The shooting happened at around 5:25 p.m. at Burma Road and Nevada Highway.  Graves died around 5:53 p.m.

No officers or deputies were hurt. Deputy Kakavulias has been placed on paid administrative leave.

The FBI has taken the lead on this investigation.
