LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — North Las Vegas police say a 64-year-old woman was allegedly shot and killed by her 31-year-old son on Monday.
The incident happened near Camino Eldorado Parkway and Giant Oak Stree, near Seastrand Park.
According to police, the female victim was discovered with gunshot wounds shortly after 11 a.m.
The suspect was taken into custody after he was pointed out to police on the scene by witnesses.
8 News Now spoke with neighbors in the area including, Fernanda Jones who says she saw police cars when she got home from school.
“I just heard a bunch of police cars and my mom told me she heard gunshots,” she said.
The suspect’s father tells 8 News Now that the mother does not live at the house, but was visiting their son, Andre when he pulled out a gun and shot her by her car.
The father, who didn’t want to be identified says his son Andre, has bipolar disorder and schizophrenia and had been taking his medication at the time.
Jones has lived in the neighborhood her entire life and says this is an unfortunate scenario and that it is not typical.
“This neighborhood is really calm. We can leave our doors open and nothing will happen,” she said.
The father tells 8 News Now his son got into his safe at the house where he keeps his firearms and took his gun.
The victim was taken to the hospital after being shot, where she died from her injuries.
There is no word on the charges the suspect is expected to face.
