Ice hockey has taken the Las Vegas valley by storm, and now a new ice rink may be headed to Henderson. It’s something the area’s been wanting for quite some time.
People who live in Henderson say they’ve been waiting years to get an ice rink.
“With the Golden Knights here, hockey has done nothing but explode,” said John Antoniadis, Vegas Valley Hockey.
Right now, there are only three ice-skating rinks in the Las Vegas valley.
- The Sobe Ice Arena at Fiesta Rancho in North Las Vegas
- The Las Vegas Ice Center in the southwest
- City National Arena in Summerlin
While details about the Henderson ice rink are limited right now, 8 News NOW has confirmed that it is indeed on its way.
In addition to the Knights, youth and adult hockey leagues often practice at City National Arena in Summerlin. But for Las Vegas valley hockey member John Antoniadis, and others like him — getting to City National Arena is a bit of a trek.
“I’m a Henderson native; a lot of our skaters are based out of Henderson, so it would be great if we had a rink over there,” said Antoniadis. “You’re looking at 5 to 10 minutes versus a half an hour.”
Henderson Mayor Debra March says the city has been in conversations with the Golden Knights to get the ball rolling on a facility. Although the location has yet to be announced.
“The Golden Knights are committed to coming to Henderson. In fact, 30 percent of the folks that go out to Summerlin are coming from the Henderson community, so this is an opportunity for them to support and encourage that same level of enthusiasm for the sport that they do in Summerlin,” Mayor March said.
According to Mayor March, the Henderson rink will be very comparable to City National Arena, and it’s something Antoniadis is looking forward to.
“If that’s the case, that’d be great, because most of the guys and girls love this arena, we love this facility,” Antoniadis said.
The ice rink would join a construction boom in Henderson, which includes a Google Data Center, the Raider’s Practice Facility, as well as new shops and restaurants along St. Rose Parkway.
8 News NOW reached out to the Vegas Golden Knights to see if we could get any more information. But they said they’re not able to provide specifics until everything is finalized.
