LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Metro Police say a juvenile suspect has been arrested in the shooting death of an 18-year-old woman in the northeast valley on Jan. 18. Investigators believe the shooting was accidental.
The female suspect was arrested on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. in the 4600 block of East Charleston near Charleston and Lamb.
Police say they responded to a report of a female who was shot. The victim — later identified as 18-year-old Ayiana Wess from Las Vegas — was transported to UMC Trauma, where she was pronounced deceased.
According to Metro Homicide Lt. Ray Spencer, the preliminary investigation indicated a group of juveniles and young adults was hanging out and listening to music in a car. The vehicle was parked in an apartment complex at the time.
One of the back-seat occupants was armed with a hand gun at one point, Spencer says, and they allegedly fired a round in the vehicle, striking and killing Wess. He notes that it is currently unclear if the shooting was accidental or intentional.
All of those sitting in the back seat fled the scene and are outstanding. Spencer says they are looking for a Black female between 18-19-years-old and two Black males in their late teens, possibly juveniles.
Spencer says a total of six people were in the vehicle. Authorities believe they are acquaintances from when they were in school together.
Police are currently speaking with witnesses on scene. Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Metro’s Homicide Section at email@example.com. If you wish to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555 or on their website.
