LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Las Vegas Strip is the engine that powers Nevada’s economy and after a violent Labor Day weekend on the Strip, Metro Police increased its presence in the resort corridor.
According to police, 37 people were arrested Friday, and 25 were arrested Saturday and a total of 10 guns were confiscated.
Metro said there were more than 100 officers who worked the Strip over the weekend.
Sheriff Joe Lombardo addressed concerns about the issue with 8 News Now in a recent “Morning Cup of Joe” segment.
“Unfortunately, we’ve had an increase in crime within the Fremont Street area and the Las Vegas Boulevard Strip area. I think we’ve done a good job of managing it but we are aware of it,” he said. “We’ve had a significant number of arrests associated with those areas.”
Some of the incidents on the Strip have been captured on camera and Las Vegas visitors are starting to take notice.
“There is a lot of really loud people. That’s going to come with the environment. You know, some people drinking it up. It is a little bit more scary this time. It’s not like it was years back, for sure,” said Marcy Rodriguez, visiting from Texas.
“We have been coming for the past few months and we have seen on the news every time we’re here that someone’s gotten stabbed or there’s a crime in one of these hotels,” said Christian Diaz, visiting from California.
8 News Now reached out to Metro to ask if the increased police presence on the strip will continue for upcoming weekends but have not heard back yet.
