Metro officer who shot inmate escapee identified

The Metro Police officer who shot an inmate who escaped from custody is identified as Officer Phong Nguyen.

The shooting happened in the parking lot of a medical center on Maryland Parkway when an inmate, who was scheduled for a medical procedure, escaped from custody and stole a truck leading police on a chase that ended in downtown Las Vegas.

The suspect, 52-year-old Christopher “Gregory” Ganci, is a 19-time convicted felon. He was sentenced to life Thursday for other crimes.

Nguyen is 25-years-old and been with Metro since Oct. 2016.

Police are holding a news conference at 10:30 a.m. to discuss the shooting. It will be live streamed on www.LasVegasNow.com.
