LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Clark County Coroner identified Mauricio Gaston, 19, as the man shot and killed in the east Las Vegas Valley May 10. His death was ruled a homicide, caused by multiple gunshot wounds.
The incident happened in the 300 block of Nellis between Bonanza Road and Stewart Avenue. Police say it occurred at an apartment complex in the area.
Around 4:45 p.m., police received multiple calls of a man who was shot in an apartment. Once on the scene, police found a man in his late teens deceased in an upstairs apartment.
According to the preliminary investigation, there was a gathering at the apartment, which included the resident and several other people. Police say an altercation broke out between the resident and the now-deceased man.
During that altercation, the resident of the apartment was pushed down a staircase. Reportedly, the other people gathered at the apartment then approached the resident at the bottom of the staircase. That resident — a male in his early 20s — then fired several shots at the group of people gathered at the apartment.
The group of people then fled the scene, but the deceased man remained upstairs. The victim had locked himself in the apartment, after shots were fired.
Police say the resident’s girlfriend and child were still in the apartment. At some point, the girlfriend unlocked the door to allow the resident to get back inside. Then, there was an altercation between the resident and the man in his late teens. The man was shot several times.
Police say there was a relationship between the victim and the shooter, but they would not give more details.
The shooter is now in the hospital due to injuries sustained from being pushed down the stairs. Police say he is “significantly injured.”
