The officer who had to fire shots at a suspect near Dean Martin Road and W. Warm Springs Road over the weekend has been identified as 39-year-old Jeffrey Blum. He’s a Sergeant with the Metro Police Department.
Metro Police says the officer-involved shooting happened around 12 p.m. Sunday in the 3500 block of West Maule Avenue.
According to investigators, everything started to unfold when a male suspect tried to break into a home in the neighborhood by breaking a window. The resident confronted the suspect, who later fled the area.
The suspect proceeded to jump a wall into the yard of another home, and that’s when he got into an argument with a woman in her 70’s who owned the house.
Sgt. Blum arrived at the home to find the suspect grabbing an “unknown ” object, before motioning as he was going to hit her with it.
The officer fired rounds, but the suspect was not hit. The suspect ran from the area, but Metro K-9 officers found him a short time later. He suffered minor injuries.
No one else was hurt. The identity of the suspect has yet to be released.
Sergeant Blum is assigned to Enterprise Area Command, Community Policing Division. He has been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the outcome of a review of this incident.
Sergeant Blum has been employed with the LVMPD since September 2005.
