Update: The Clark County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Shannon K. Awa, 46. His cause of death was listed as multiple gunshot wounds with the manner being homicide.
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — There were some frightening moments for high school students arriving at Las Vegas Academy in downtown Las Vegas Thursday morning when police responded to reports of gunfire near the school.
According to Lt. Bill Gablin with Las Vegas Metropolitan police, the call about gunfire was received at 6:51 a.m. minutes before the first bell rang. Numerous witnesses described a suspect they saw shooting in the area of the 400 block of South 10th Street near Clark Avenue. Officers were able to locate the man and take him into custody. When officers did a welfare check at a nearby apartment complex, they found a victim with a gunshot wound to his head. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The school was placed on a soft lockdown that was lifted around 9 a.m. Lt. Giblin said the shooting was a random incident and the school was not the intended target.
There is an ongoing investigation in the area. bill giblin
