Man, 72, faces murder charge after death of his stepson

A 72-year-old man was arrested and is facing a murder charge after allegedly shooting and killing his stepson, according to Metro Police.

Jerry Winters was taken into custory following the death of his adult stepson Sunday.

The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. in the 5100 block of Misty Morning Drive, near Tropicana Avenue and Torrey Pines Drive. 

According to police, the two were arguing and the suspect had a baseball bat in his hand. The stepson took it from him and then the stepfather retrieved a firearm.  Police say the stepson, who is in his mid-20s, was then shot in the torso.

The victim’s mother called police. He was found by officers in a bedroom and pronounced dead.

Lt. Ray Spencer says the suspect, who is in his 70s, and the mother were being questioned.

Preliminary details suggest the incident started as an argument between the man and his stepson.
