WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) — President Donald Trump and the White House coronavirus task force are set to hold a briefing Thursday on the country’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
President Trump shared that he is focused on assisting the airlines and airline industry. “The airline industry has been hit very hard…and we will be doing a lot to help them,” said Pres. Trump.
He expressed his hopes for the country, “Hopefully we will be opening up very soon.”
To date, the U.S. has reported over 16,000 deaths related to coronavirus, and over 450,000 confirmed cases. In New York state, they reported a record increase in coronavirus deaths for a third consecutive day with 799, raising the total above 7,000.
“Our testing operation has become the best and most sophisticated anywhere, ” said Pres. Trump.
Regarding testing, both the President and Vice President referenced passing two million tests in the country.
President Trump says there are currently 19 therapies and treatments being tested, with 26 more in clinical trials.
Thursday morning, the latest numbers on unemployment were released, with 6.6 million Americans filing for unemployment benefits last week.
A reporter asked, “What do you say to the more than 16 million Americans who lost their jobs and fear the economy won’t bounce back?
“I think the economy will be doing very well… I think our country, from an economic standpoint, will become stronger than ever… we will be back,” added President Trump.
Vice President Pence spoke in confidence of the data supporting a stabilization of the economy.
He added, “$125 billion has been approved through day five of the Paycheck Protection Program.”
According to the Department of Defense, as of today, 4,1000 active duty medical personnel have been deployed to serve in New York and on the USNS Comfort hospital ship “to bring much-needed relief to our healthcare system,” added Vice President Pence.
“About 118,000-120,000 people are being tested per day,” said Dr. Birx in answering a reporter’s questions at the coronavirus task force update.
Dr. Birx added that about 63% of states have less than 10% positive, despite excessive testing.
“Every day there seems to be a record number of deaths compared to the day before,” Dr. Fauci stated in contrast.
“We’re going to end up having a lot of ventilators for the future, in case something else were to happen. We’re in great shape right now,” said President Trump.
“We are working around the clock to scale up the different types of tests the FDA has approved,” added Vice President Pence.
“The best thing we can do to reopen America is to put the coronavirus behind us,” added Vice President Pence.
