The man shot by police Wednesday after he escaped from custody appeared in court Thursday morning on previous charges.

Gregory Ganci, 52, a convicted felon was being taken to a medical appointment when he escaped custody, jumped into a truck and sped away. A Metro police officer shot at him, hitting him once in the left shoulder. Ganci led police on a car chase, after ramming other vehicles, from Maryland Parkway and Vegas Valley Road to downtown Las Vegas where the truck ran out of gas and he was taken into custody.

Ganci, who has been to prison 12 times, appeared in court Thursday morning surrounded by several Metro officers. Gancy argued with the judge that he has never hurt anyone.

“I’m not dangerous to the public ever,” he said.

The judge sentenced Gancy to life in prison without the possibility of parole other charges including robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and kidnapping.

He is still facing charges in Wednesday’s incident that resulted in the police shooting.
