Former LVA teacher pleads guilty to child abuse in plea deal

A former Las Vegas Academy of the Arts teacher pleaded guilty to one count of felony child abuse, neglect or endangerment in a plea deal Monday.

John Robert Morris, 56, was arrested in Sept. 2018 after a lengthy investigation which revealed a former student reported a sexual act between her and Morris, according to court records. The incident occurred in 2017. The former student told her university counselor the two were in a relationship for a few months.

Morris was charged with a sex act with a student but in exchange for his guilty plea his charge was reduced to a the child abuse charge.

Morris was a school district employee for more than 25 years and a founding member of LVA. He was in charge of the school’s theater department.

Morris is scheduled to be sentenced on May 30. He is currently being electronically monitored.
