Dodgeball for cancer in “What’s Cool at School”

Local News

A kid-directed charity effort called “Dodgeball for Cancer” at Lawrence Junior High was well-attended, highly competitive, and played in a gymnasium full of energy and enthusiasm.

The purpose of packing the gym on a recent Friday afternoon goes beyond games.

All proceeds from “Dodgeball for Cancer” go to a Las Vegas charity called Cancer Train, an organization that raises money with charity events to help locals who need an assist offsetting medical bills, while undergoing cancer treatment.

The idea for the event came directly from students.

As Health Teacher and Crossfit Coach Krystal Howell described it, “It all started with a student who lost a friend because of cancer, and didn’t know how to deal with it, and wanted to do something about it.”

By taking action, and raising money, students feel empowered.

Eighth grader Daisy Hung summed it up, “It feels good knowing that you’re actually helping create something that’s bigger than yourself to find a cure.”

Donors and spectators in attendance helped to increase the size of the donation, and participating students put on a show.

HOT 97.5 FM deejayed the event, and Nitro Circus star and extreme sports pioneer, Las Vegan Aaaron “Wheelz” Fotheringham, was there to get the crowd going. He described it as a “positive event raising money and helping families with loved ones who have cancer. I can’t think of a better cause. I’m just really honored to be here, and be part of it.”

All that fun, excitement, and effort producing dollars that go directly to Cancer Train to help the fight against cancer.
