The Fremont Street Experience launched its $32-million renovation of the Viva Vision canopy early Monday morning. The work is part of a project to give the world’s largest single video screen a major face lift.

“The redevelopment of the iconic Viva Vision canopy is a major milestone for Fremont Street Experience and the City of Las Vegas,” said Patrick Hughes, President and Chief Executive Officer of Fremont Street Experience. “With Fremont Street Experience attracting more than 23 million visitors a year, we’re really looking forward to seeing the new energy this brings to downtown Las Vegas and the positive impact it will have on the entire community.”

Viva Vision spans five city blocks. According to a statement from the Fremont Street Experience, the display will illuminate the Fremont pedestrian mall with 16,433,152 pixels. It promises to be seven-times brighter than the existing canopy with four-times the resolution.

Preliminary work began Monday morning. The full project will take several months and should be completed by December 31, 2019.

The new Viva Vision canopy will feature a new array of digital content. Plans also call for interactive elements. Visitors will be able to write personal messages on Viva Vision and vote for the next song or video via an app.

The project is paid for through a partnership with the City of Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. The work will be done by Tré Builders and Watchfire Signs, an Illinois-based LED manufacturer.
