At 10:43 a.m. NHP was called to a motor vehicle crash involving a semi truck hauling double trailers and a 2013 Honda Civic. The semi was westbound on SR160 in the left turn lane to go southbound on Torrey Pines. The Honda was eastbound on SR160 in the right travel lane. The semi made the left turn to go southbound on Torrey Pines and the Honda struck the second trailing unit of the semi-trailer. The Honda drove under the semi-trailer causing the roof to come off the Honda.
The male driver and front seat female passenger of the Honda were taken to UMC Trauma with critical injuries. NHP said there was also a 3-year-old child in the rear passenger seat of the Honda who was properly restrained in a child safety seat. She was transported to UMC and is alert and appears to have no major injuries.
The driver of the semi was transported to St. Rose San Martin Campus for minor injuries. He is cooperating with investigators at this time. The driver and passengers of the Honda have not been identified at this time.
NHP closed off several lanes of Blue Diamond Road, near Jones Boulevard, due to the crash, and commuters were asked to avoid the area.
