LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Las Vegas City Council will discuss the possibility to place new penalties for those who use illegal fireworks.

Every year leading up to the 4th of July, firefighters respond to dozens of fires sparked by illegal fireworks. Lighting up illegal fireworks is illegal in city limits. The ordinance being looked at proposes tougher fines.

If someone is caught the first time with illegal fireworks, they face a $250 fine. It goes up to $500 if caught the second time.

The goal is deter people from setting off potentially dangerous fireworks in their neighborhood.

It’s possible the new penalties could be put into place this summer.
