LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Canelo Alvarez looked like one of the top boxers in the world tonight during his victory over Daniel Jacobs, but his true test comes once again in the form of the looming Gennady “GGG” Golovkin.

Canelo’s record against Golovkin may stand at 1-0-1, but there’s a large contingent of boxing fans and experts who believe he won neither of those fights. Favorable judging and the raucous pro-Canelo crowds in Las Vegas are often used as a reason for his success, so a third fight against Golovkin is needed to further establish his legacy.

Tonight, Jacobs served as the latest notch to Canelo’s climb up the list of all-time great Mexican fighters. The fight wasn’t easy by any means, Canelo escaped with a 116-112, 115-113, 115-113 unanimous decision but he showcased what makes him one of the best champions in boxing.

Canelo showcased his quickness and accuracy in the early rounds as he created a good lead on the scorecards. Then the bigger Jacobs began to lean on Canelo and make the fight a bit grittier by closing the distance. The scores closed, but Canelo proved to have more urgency in the 12th round. His closing stanza won him the fight on two of the judge’s cards and ultimately earned him yet another middleweight title.

There are now two options for Canelo Alvarez. Go for a trilogy match up with GGG or chase the final middleweight belt held by Demetrius Andrade. Both are viable options for boxing’s biggest stars and both will have to take place sooner or later.

Either way, Canelo continues to stand atop the boxing pantheon and look down on his pursuers.
