Animal Foundation offers holiday incentives, advice for people wanting to adopt

Pets: They’re cute and furry, but are they a good holiday gift?  The Animal Foundation is offering adoption incentives, but they are also advising the public to rescue responsibly.

Through Dec. 31 cats and dogs 6-months and older are available at the shelter located near Mojave and Bonanza.

“We have stockings full of toys already for the other dogs,” said Anthony Jurado, adopted a dog.  “We’re gonna get a stocking full of dog toys for this one too and some treats.”

Jurado and his wife are adding a third dog to their family just in time for Christmas.

“It all worked out very well because I promised her we would get another dog,” Jurado said.

Jurado and his wife agreed to gift themselves a rescue dog they plan on naming Hallow.

The Animal Foundation says it’s probably a good idea to be on the same page when adopting a pet for your family or for someone else.

“The best gift you can give this holiday season is the gift of a loving home for a shelter pet but adopting a pet is a big decision and one that wouldn’t be taken lightly,” said Kelly Leahy, the communications manager at the Animal Foundation.

As far as return rates, Leahy says it doesn’t increase with any of the promotions they offer.

“There’s actually research that shows that free promotions work just as well as adopting a pet for a fee,”  Leahy said.

Leahy says as much as they want every single pet to get adopted, they first want to make sure they’re going to good homes.

“People assume that a pet will just naturally settle in to a home but a shelter pet requires patience and love and understanding, just like any animal, so it’s important that people know that up front and that they dont expect miracles overnight,” Leahy said.

Jurado said he and his wife have been down this road before.

They’ve rescued two other dogs and are ready to get to know the new member of their family.

“You really don’t know what to expect, but sometimes it turns out really well and I’m hoping for the best for this one too,” Jurado said.

For anyone still on the fence about adopting, the Animal Foundation is also offering a fostering promotion.

Take a dog or a cat home for a week, and they’ll provide all the supplies, and for those who decide to keep the animal, the Animal Foundation will waive the fees.
