LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Around 100 firefighters responded to a blaze at the Nevada Buddhist Association Friday morning. It is the largest temple of its kind in Nevada and unable to serve hundreds of people who attend there.
“It hasn’t hit me yet. I mean, It’s going to hit everyone. Everyone’s just stayig inside, talking and I think later on today. I think it’s really going to hit everyone,” said Sarah McGregor.
A fire was reported at the building, located at 4189 S. Jones Boulevard near Flamingo Road, around 7:15 a.m. Significant damage to the inside of the building is reported. There were no injuries.
McGregor says the temple is where she learned her first steps as a child.
“It’s where everyone says, hey someone’s getting married come to the temple, have a service, someone’s born, someone’s passed away. It where everybody connects,” she said.
The temple is now forced to cancel important prayer services for medicine Buddha’s birthday which was planned to start on Friday. It will also impact the upcoming Chinese New Year.
A Saturday morning post on the temple’s Facebook page revealed the cancelation of the prayer service:
“Due to the fire, the Medicine Buddha service will be canceled. Thank you for your understanding. We are looking forward to serving the community before 2020 Chinese New Year.”
The ATF and FBI will investigate because the fire happened at a place of worship.
