Lawyer Says Accused Vegas Machete Slayer Plans to Plea Not Guilty

A Nevada man held in the machete slaying of a woman and the slashing of the woman’s son and daughter intends to plead not guilty.

That’s according to the lawyer representing 29-year-old Victor O. Cruz-Garcia. Cruz-Garcia wasn’t asked to enter a plea by a Las Vegas justice of the peace who set a preliminary hearing date for Jan. 8.

Deputy public defender Tim O’Brien declined outside court to say much more about Cruz-Garcia. He’s accused of hacking 46-year-old Beatrice Alvarez to death during an angry rage on Dec. 20, and slashing Alvarez’s 27-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter.

The son, Sergio Casterjon, underwent surgery to reattach his right arm and a finger. The daughter was treated for cuts to her head and face.
