The shuttered Western Hotel in downtown Las Vegas will be buzzing with activity this weekend.

Some of the top drone pilots will be competing in what’s being billed as the first indoor drone race of its kind in the world.

It may not look like much now, but the Downtown Project is hoping to shine the spotlight on the Western Hotel this weekend for the inaugural venue for the Xtreme Drone Circuit.

“It’s exhilarating, it’s a total adrenaline rush,” said Harrison Gale, co-founder and drone pilot.

Dozens of drone pilots like Gale, who co-founded the Xtreme Drone Circuit, will compete in the inaugural XDC competitive indoor race.

“This is going to be one of the most technical courses that anyone has ever raced through,” he said.

The idea to race drones through the twists and turns of an old hotel and casino was hatched during a conversation between Gale and Downtown Project CEO Mark Rowland.

“He asked me, ‘What are you passionate about?’ And I said, ‘Well, drone racing really.'”

“I said ‘What the hell is that?’ And then he showed me a video and I was like ‘wow, that is amazing! Why can’t we do it in downtown Las Vegas?’ And he said, ‘Well why not?'”

We were also curious about how it works and Gale took 8 News NOW for a virtual fly along.

“I think here on some of these straight-aways, we’ll see people going 50, 60 miles an hour,” Gale said.

Organizers say the event will be spectator friendly.

Nets will be installed before Sunday’s races and time trials and the event will be environmentally friendly.

“We wanted this to be a green event, so we’re actually bringing together enough solar panels to, they’ll be here, they’ll be generating all the electricity that we need,” Rowland said.

Going off the grid while trying to buzz onto the radar of the tech world.

“This is just our inaugural event, this is just the beginning, so this is really a teaser for everyone, and we’re going to do something much bigger during CES,” Gale said.

The races begin at noon Sunday with the finals at 5 p.m. admission is free if you’d like to go and watch.
