The I-Team has learned it was an illegal medical facility that FBI agents and Metro Police raided at a Las Vegas home September 30.
Authorities arrested a man living at the home, Brad Resnik, for stalking his ex-girlfriend.
The I-Team has uncovered another man living there has been booked on dozens of charges for practicing medicine without a license.
Rick Van Thiel is not a licensed physician, and he’s no stranger to the justice system.
He’s sitting in the Clark County Detention Center and facing more than two dozen charges, including some for illegal gun and drug possession.
There are also indications from neighbors that Van Thiel has links to the Sovereign movement, which is often on police radar for anti-government extremism.
Police and federal agents raided the home on East Monroe Avenue near Nellis Boulevard and Owens Avenue last Wednesday. Officers weren’t talking about why they were there, but people in the neighborhood say they suspected one of the men inside might be up to something – and not just because the property bristled with surveillance cameras.
“He’s weird. He would always be there, not working or anything,” said neighbor Gloria Cortez. “People coming here asking for… they would say, ‘We came to look for a doctor.’”
Van Thiel was arrested on dozens of counts of practicing medicine without a license. He’s also facing charges for illegal possession of drugs and a gun.
Court records indicate he is at least a five-time convicted felon. He was arrested for attempted murder in 2007, though the charges were reduced to assault with a deadly weapon.
Van Thiel was busted in a prostitution sting in 2012 and sued the Metro vice detective who made the arrest. Van Thiel’s lawsuit contained citations and language commonly associated with the Sovereign movement. The suit was eventually dropped.
Shane Kleenenberg was Van Thiel’s roommate. He had only kind words for Van Thiel and confirmed the Sovereign connection.
“Rick is a Sovereign and created waves in the judicial system,” he said. “He helps people with medical procedures, alternative-type healing, and I guess that’s what he’s in trouble for.”
It is unclear which illegal medical procedures Van Thiel allegedly performed. Those details are expected to emerge soon.
Resnik was booked on a stalking charge. He bailed out of jail and did not appear for his initial court appearance. Another arrest warrant was issued for him.
