The I-Team has learned that former Nevada Senator and Majority Leader Harry Reid underwent cancer surgery this morning.
Reid has kept the news about his diagnosis very quiet since doctors discovered an internal mass a few weeks ago.
Reid communicated with the I-Team while on his way to the hospital this morning and confirmed he was about to undergo an operation.
According to family members, the surgery at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore went well. His family released the following statement:
“Today, Former Democratic Leader Harry Reid underwent surgery at Johns Hopkins Cancer Center to remove a tumor from his pancreas. His doctors caught the problem early during a routine screening and his surgeons are confident that the surgery was a success and that the prognosis for his recovery is good. He will undergo chemotherapy as the next step in his treatment. He is now out of surgery, in good spirits and resting with his family. He is grateful to his highly skilled team of doctors and to all who have sent and continue to send their love and support.”
Reid served 30 years in the U.S. Senate and is widely regarded as the most powerful elected official in Nevada history. He retired last year.
