Hurricane Irma has yet to make landfall in Florida but it is already causing disruptions at airports around the country, including at McCarran International Airport.
It’s a rare sight to see the usually bustling beaches along the coast of Miami bare as the crowds escape before Hurricane Irma barrels through the popular vacation spot.
“Our flight is supposed to be, was supposed to be from Miami on Sunday to Zurich but then they told us that it might not happen,” said Shai Harel.
He was visiting Miami from Switzerland and says he couldn’t take the chance of getting stranded there, but getting out was not easy.
“All flights from Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Orlando, everything, Tampa. Everything was fully booked. The only thing that we found was a flight from Tallahassee.”
He says it took them 10 hours to drive from Miami to Tallahassee. They barely made their flight.
Meanwhile, for Florida resident Jeffrey Reeves, he decided to book a last minute flight last night.
“I always try to leave if possible when storms come to Florida,” said Jeffrey Reeves.
And that’s exactly what he did. Especially after riding out other hurricanes in the past.
“It’s frightening. it’s terrifying. You have to sit there for hours and hours with the winds going crazy outside and you don’t know what’s going to happen, you know, it’s terrifying, Reeves said.
He plans to fly back Tuesday after spending time with friends in Las Vegas.
“I’m so happy to be out of there. You have no idea.”
There are still some flights to and from Florida Thursday night and Friday. However, keep in mind, that can change at anytime.
