At least 50 people are dead, and 53 were hospitalized, most in critical condition, after a gunman opened fire on a crowd of about 300 individuals in a gay nightclub in Orlando.  It happened early Sunday morning at Pulse nightclub.

In light of Sunday’s horrific shooting, 8 News NOW wanted to know what security measures are in place for local clubs across the valley.

Tens of millions of visitors come to Las Vegas every year, so security is a crucial aspect on a daily basis.  8 News NOW spoke with former Security Director Dave Shepeard.  He worked for a major property on the Las Vegas Strip, and he told 8 News NOW many factors go into play when assessing threats.

Shepeard says frontline security is crucial.  In the front of the club, there should be metal detectors and pat-downs before anyone’s allowed to enter.  However, Shepeard says folks out on the town looking for a fun night also have to be aware of their surroundings.

Shepeard says simple steps like finding a place to hide, whether it be a closet or knowing where the exits are can help someone if they ever encounter an active shooter.
