Financial help is being made available for victims of the 1 October shooting.

Through the Las Vegas Survivors Project, a group of financial advisors are offering a free service for those who received money through the Las Vegas Victims’ Fund.

The purpose of the survivors project is to give guidance and financial expertise to those who have started to  receive those distributions —  that’s 523 people.

More than $31.4 million was donated through the Las Vegas Victims’ Fund to help the families of those who were killed and survivors of the the mass shooting.

Forty financial advisors will be providing a minimum of four hours of free financial advice to any of those recipients.

Financial planner Greg Phelps is a 1 October survivor and a volunteer for the project:

“Coming at this from a perspective of, well myself being a survivor, it’s very near and dear and passionate to me, but coming at this from a perspective of we want to make a difference, we want to make sure that every last dollar is maximized because you’ve been through enough, and that’s why we’re willing to take the time and actually reach out to the victims,” said Greg Phelps, president , Red Rock Wealth Management.

Phelps says the biggest advice he wants to give to families is to not make any major decisions with the disbursements just yet. Do your homework and do a lot of research.

He said, depending on your financial goals and needs, proper planning can help you avoid mistakes from a tax and college savings standpoint.

The Vegas Strong Resiliency Center is also a website where survivors can get information about resources available to them. Their phone number is (702) 455-AIDE (2433) or 1-833-299-2433.
