Flooding forces road closures – List of problem roads

Pooling rain caused numerous issues at intersections and roads around the Las Vegas valley Thursday. The following areas were affected by the weather, so commuters were encouraged to find alternate routes of travel.

  • The Red Rock Scenic Loop is closed due to flooding.
  • The intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Cheyenne Avenue is closed due to flooding.

Nevada Highway Patrol’s crash totals from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. are as followed:

  • 2 hit and run crashes
  • 39 injury crashes
  • 69 property damage crashes
  • 110 crashes overall

According to NHP, that’s about triple the amount of crashes received on a normal day with no weather. No life-threatening injuries were reported.

The northwest part of the valley experience a lot of flooding, especially near Grand Teton and El Capitan.  The Flood Control District says work in the area is 50 percent completed, but there are two more projects in the pipeline.

Everyone in the area seemed to that the rainny day and its challenges in stride.

Patrick Walker, reporter: “Are you going to try to take a run in the rain before it leaves?”
Kloe Littleman: “Yeah, I think I might. I kind of like running in the rain, so it should be good.”
Gavin Lane, enjoying the rain: “I see people out on the freeway that don’t know how to drive out here, it’s crazy because most people aren’t even from out here, so you’d figure they’d get it together, but not really.”
