Family speaks out after child death

Twenty-one-year-old Denaugio Scarlett is accused of killing his girlfriend’s 3-year-old daughter, Aaliyah Cameron, over the weekend.

Investigators say Scarlett was babysitting Cameron while the child’s mother, Malaysia Daniels, was at work.

“She just turned 3 and she had her whole life ahead of her and now she’s not here. It’s hard, it’s hard to grasp for anybody,” said Ebony Chapman, the victim’s aunt.

When Daniels got home, Cameron wasn’t breathing.

“That was everything to me. She’s been with me from when I first started when I had nothing to where I am now,” said Daniels.

Scarlett was initially charged with child abuse but a murder charge was added the next day after an autopsy was performed.

The Clark County Coroner determined that Cameron died of blunt force injuries.

“Anytime that I had a bad day I would just look at her because I knew that I had somebody to keep going for,” said Daniels.

Various websites show Scarlett played basketball and previously attended Basic High School. He refused a jailhouse interview request on Tuesday.

“She’s a great mother, and she would never let harm come to her daughter or her son’s way and if she would’ve known about any harm coming their way, you better believe that she would’ve done something or stopped or prevented it,” said Latricia Carr, the victim’s grandmother.

Scarlett will be in court on Wednesday.
