A Las Vegas family is grieving after a pit bull attacked and killed 9-year-old Derion Stevenson Wednesday night.
The boy went to his friend’s house for some candy and when he got to the front door of the home, the pit bull got spooked and attacked him.
Derion’s uncle, A.J. Moore, tried to save him.
“I couldn’t sleep last night because of it,” he said.
His nephew was mauled and killed by a pit bull in an east side Las Vegas neighborhood.
“I ran over there thinking he might just need some stitches or something, but I’m seeing my nephew’s face full of blood,” he said.
Moore says little Derion ran into his friend’s house when the dog got startled and loose, then attacked.
“When I got to see him, he couldn’t move,” Moore said. “If I told him to move, he couldn’t move. It’s like he couldn’t hear anything I said, he couldn’t talk. One eye was open, the other closed.”
Stevenson was rushed to the hospital, but Moore says the dog bit his nephew on the neck and head and hit a main artery.
“It’s tragic. It’s really tragic,” said neighbor Lee-Ann Skonski.
Neighbors were horrified to hear about the attack.
“It still breaks me up inside. I try not to think about it. It breaks me up,” Skonski said.
Even as Moore works to come to grips with the loss of his nephew, he appreciates the help from the pit bull’s owner who rushed to assist.
“The owner of the dog, she was helping my nephew the whole way through until I got there. She’s tearing down because of how scared she was and I understood in every way,” Moore said.
Moore says not a day will go by that he won’t think about Derion.
“Even if you he saw you 20 times in the same day, he would tell you he loved you. Twenty times a day, he didn’t get tired of it.”
Clark County officials say the pit bull was euthanized Thursday morning after the dog owner surrendered the animal to the county.
Metro police say the case is still under investigation and detectives are working to determine if the dog owner could face charges.
A GoFundMe account has been set up by Derion’s family.
