Exploding mailboxes: Fireworks rattle neighborhood

Little is left of a mailbox near Washington and Nellis after a firework exploded inside of it Wednesday night.

“I don’t know, maybe some kids doing pranks. To me, I didn’t even want to open mine because you know you never know what’s going to be in there,” said neighbor Luis Padilla.

Padilla was the one who called 9-1-1. Police are still searching for the people responsible.

“This is a quiet neighborhood,” he said. “You don’t hear those things here so it was weird.”

Another explosion in a mailbox happened a few miles away. It’s usually around this time of the year that these types of stories start to pop up.

“I dread the 4th of July. I’m a patriotic person, but this is ridiculous,” said Elizabeth Jones.

Jones has lived near Washington and Torrey Pines for the past 25 years. Jones says the fireworks have already started in her neighborhood.

“Our dogs go under my desk, they hide, they shake,” said Jones.

She hopes this year won’t be as bad as before.

“The day after, we go out and pick up all the leavings from these fireworks. They’re on our roof. They’re in the yard. They’re everywhere and I’m afraid someday they’re going to set us on fire,” she said.
