Credit monitoring company Equifax says a breach exposed social security numbers, birth dates and other data from 143 million Americans. Equifax is one of the nation’s three major credit reporting firms.
According to the L.A. Times, the company said the intrusion, which was enabled by a website vulnerability, occurred from mid-May through July. However, the issue wasn’t discovered until July 29.
The company is working with a cybersecurity consultant to investigate.
