Child suffers serious injuries when struck by vehicle in parking lot

A child is said to be in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle Monday afternoon.

It happened around 3:15 p.m. in the parking lot of St. Rose Pediatrics which is located at 6980 S. Cimmaron Road near the 215 Beltway and Durango Drive.

Officers said the child was walking to the parking lot with adults when she was hit by a car.  She was dragged underneath the vehicle.

According to Metro Police, the nearly 3-year-old child sustained serious injuries, including some to the head.

Metro says the driver was not impaired, but they believe speeding was a factor.  Police call the incident an unfortunate accident.

“It’s never too early to start teaching the kids it’s important to always be careful in a parking lot, because parking lots unlike streets —  we expect them to be a little bit safer because we walk through them, but remember that parking lots have no actual traffic so cars can come from anywhere people can come from anywhere so obviously be careful,” said Sgt. Robert Stauffer, LVMPD Fatal Detail.

The child was taken to University Medical Center for treatment and surgery. No other details were released.
