Acts of Kindness: 9th Island Aunties

News
Cathi Minami embodies the meaning of aloha by serving others in the Las Vegas community. She’s been managing “The Giving Project” for the past two years. “I decided several years ago that before I leave this earth, that I want to positively impact those around me.”

On the second Saturday of every month she and many community partners gather to offer supplies, a hot meal and outreach. A safe environment as volunteers partner with Metro’s Downtown Area Command offering help to some three-hundred people each month.

Sergeant Bret Ficklin says Cathi’s involvement is a game changer in various aspects of our community, “She took it by the reigns, it grew from a few people coming out, to what it is today.”

Thirteen years ago Cathi founded what she calls, “The Ninth Island Aunties.”  She and her Hawaiian sisters bring hundreds of Easter baskets and Christmas gifts to kids. They cook meals for families and this year, a greater focus on Veterans and active duty military. Sergeant Ficklin adds, “When you’re around Cathi for five minutes you’re going to realize she’s one of the most charitable, most loving people you’re ever going to meet in your life, and she’s one of the most humble.”
