The shoes laid out on the lawn of the Capitol in Washington, D.C., represent the number of children who have been killed by gun violence since the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary, which happened in 2012.
According to CBS News, Avaaz, an international advocacy group, planned the demonstration to honor victims killed since the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012.
CBS affiliate WUSA reports that the group based the protest on research from the American Academy of Pediatrics that found approximately 1,300 children are killed by guns each year. That’s about three every day.
