VIDEO: Thousands ring in 2022 in Las Vegas with New Year’s Eve celebration, fireworks

Vegas NYE

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Las Vegas put on a major party for New Year’s Eve with big crowds and a spectacular fireworks show.

One of the most visited streets in the world was closed to vehicle traffic — which only happens once a year — to become a pedestrian party scene.

The theme of the fireworks show was “Deuces Wild” and the pyrotechnic display, one of the biggest in the country, did not disappoint. Eight resort properties along the Las Vegas Strip took part in the pyrotechnic display with fireworks launched from the rooftops of the hotels. The casinos that took part in the show were the newly opened Resorts World, The STRAT, The Venetian Resort, Treasure Island (TI), Caesars Palace, Planet Hollywood, Aria, and MGM Grand.

Earlier in the evening, it appeared high winds might threaten the fireworks display. Around 6:30 p.m., one of the highest wind gusts was recorded at 59 mph at Reid International Airport. As the evening progressed the winds died down.

The previous New Year’s Eve was more subdued in Las Vegas when the usual fireworks show was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although new cases have surged with 9,000 being reported since Monday, the celebration went on as planned.

Nexstar Media Inc.’s Las Vegas television station, KLAS-TV, broadcast a live New Year’s Eve special with coverage that featured live musical performances, a countdown to midnight across all four time zones, and fireworks from Dallas, Denver, and Las Vegas.

The show aired and livestreamed in the following 12 cities: Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento, San Francisco, Portland, Denver, Salt Lake City, Albuquerque, Honolulu, Fresno, Bakersfield, Grand Junction, and Colorado Springs.
